“Oddity” [Fantasia 2024] Review

“Oddity”, directed by Damian Mc Carthy, is a supernatural horror film that blends various horror elements to create a uniquely unsettling experience. The plot follows Yana, who becomes increasingly intrigued by a mysterious wooden mannequin that her partner Ted’s sister-in-law, Darcy, brings into their home. Darcy, played by Carolyn Bracken in a dual role, seeks to uncover the truth behind her twin sister Dani’s death, which occurred a year earlier in the same house.

The production design, particularly the eerie, stone house setting and the terrifying wooden mannequin, enhances the film’s sense of dread. The film skillfully integrates elements of murder mystery, supernatural horror, and home invasion thriller, creating a narrative that keeps viewers on edge. Mc Carthy’s direction and the strong performances, especially by Bracken and Caroline Menton as Yana, anchor the film and deliver a satisfying, if complex, horror experience.

Overall, Oddity is an intense experience meant to be seen on the biggest screen possible. The strong direction and acting makes it a dream for slow burn horror fans.
