Eddie Alcazar’s (Perfect) second feature film delves once more into the pursuit of perfection, this time in a style reminiscent of Eraserhead. But will Divinity have a similar impact on its audience?
Set in the future, Divinity follows Jaxxon Pierce (Stephen Dorff) who carries on his father’s research and brings to market a substance that offers eternal youth, radically disrupting human civilization. When a mysterious, alluring woman infiltrates the Fool’s Fortress, two cosmic brothers descend from the heavens to kidnap Jaxxon.
Divinity is an experimental black and white film that critiques the obsession with beauty and the pursuit of physical perfection at the expense of health. While the film proposes numerous intriguing concepts, it risks losing the audience in its experimental narrative, which tends to overshadow the plot. The elements of horror are sparse, and the action veers off in a direction that feels at odds with the rest of the story. Regrettably, this mismatch in tone causes the film to miss its mark.
