‘The Creator’ came at a genuine timeline in our society today, while we’ve had movies about A.I. taking over in the past before the major one that set the bar almost too high too touch was ‘Terminator’ and Terminator 2: Judgement Day’ and the Will Smith science-fiction smash hit ‘I, Robot’ Filmmaker Gareth Edwards tries to reminds us of days of future past with a movie that is shamelessly willing to act like a greatest hit of the genre with hardly any emotion added at all. It also features tired tropes including an all too knowing soundtrack with one of the first songs you hear being Radiohead’s OK Computer which will be a complete eye roll for some, while others may thoroughly enjoy ‘The Creator’ for me it felt rushed and more like a Roland Emmerich disaster porn rather than the Oscar movie it wanted to be.
John David Washington seems heavily miscast throughout the film where someone like Brian Tyree Henry would have turned this character into an Oscar-Worthy performance as it’s a lot to juggle, after the entertaining yet forgettable ‘Tenet’ John David Washington returns to the genre in an uneven fashion.
A future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence. Joshua (Washington), a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving thedisappearance of his wife (Chan), is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war… and mankind itself. Joshua and his team of elite operatives journey across enemy lines, into the dark heart of AI-occupied territory… only to discover the world-ending weapon he’s been instructed to destroy is an AI in the form of a young child (Voyles).
Synopsis
The story around the Artificial Intelligence and U.S. Soldiers is reminiscent of multiple war movies that came before it, that was another factor of the movie that was detrimental to its originality. It felt like the Afghanistan war set in a future civilization, as well as it tried to be the ‘ Apocalypse Now’ of A.I. movies and it turned itself on its head by being derivative of what it was trying to accomplish by making the soldiers seem out of touch and ignorant to its perceived enemies.
The war sequences itself were too illogical it felt like you were watching characters play a video game rather than actors. It often felt too dense and more like a dumb blockbuster disaster movie more kin to being a Roland Emmerich movie or a Michael Bay film.
The subplot between Joshua and Maya seemed forced as an unintentional joke with sluggish dialogue between the love interest felt like they were written by ChatGPT themselves. Gareth Edward’s is still quite the science-fiction director after doing ‘Monsters’ and the best Star Wars film out of the new Disney bunch ‘Rogue One’. However when it came to ‘The Creator’ it proved to be his first flop. If you’re wanting a popcorn movie this one is for you, I was expecting much more than we got.
