Triangle of Sadness might be the best film of the year for a while till Oscar season comes around. It even may get a lot of buzz for the director as well as Woody Harrelson for Best Supporting Actor, but the screenplay may not be the high-flying concept we’d like to see from a film that takes on socialism and capitalism. When I see that as the main premise for a film I’ve seen it rub many people the wrong way. However, Triangle of Sadness is amazing in what it accomplished.
The pacing of the film can be a bit uneven, especially the events leading up to the big extended cameo from Woody Harrelson, it’s too telegraphed what’s going to happen when he enters the film. Then after Woody graces the screen, the film goes from good to great. Harris Dickinson also gives a breakout performance as he holds the film together for the most part out acting most of the cast.
In a year filled with Superhero movies and remakes, Triangle of Sadness is a breath of fresh air for the middle of Fall, that will begin the award nominations buzz for this season. Ruben Östlund gives us a film we can watch multiple times and pick up on something new each viewing.
