‘Watcher’ Review: Watch the best thriller of the summer this weekend

Synopsis: As a serial killer stalks the city, a young actress who just moved to town with her boyfriend notices a mysterious stranger watching her from across the street

Watcher is the best thriller of the summer so far, right after ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ reminded us how magical the big spectacle movies should be seen on the big screen in the loudest theater possible with Dolby Atmos. We are reminded once again of the cleverness that comes with independent thrillers, and once again we witness what makes small thrillers so great on the big screen as well. I place Watcher among some of the biggest surprises you’ll ever have on the big screen, one I go to is the Clive Barker adaptation ‘The Midnight Meat Train’.

It has a slow beginning once you’re getting introduced to the characters and why they are where they are, after things get settled down it’s off to the races in this cat and mouse thriller that will take your breath away halfway through the film and won’t ease up. Burn Gorman plays the creepiest villain in a thriller in year’s possibly since Vinnie Jones in ‘The Midnight Meat Train’ I am sure there are better examples recently, I keep going to that film because ‘Watcher’ brings that same atmosphere.

Maika Monroe plays her character Julia well enough that it will remind you why we fell in love with her in such films as ‘It Follows’ and ‘The Guest’. ‘Watcher’ is an intimate cast ensemble including a scene-stealing Madalina Anea as Irina, Karl Glusman is also fantastic as the boyfriend who supports Julia, yet is still skeptical about her claims of someone watching her. This film is so damn great, you’ll be talking about the ending for days!

Overall Grade: 4.5/5 Stars
